Ukraine neighbours woo Indian students – Times of India

KOLKATA: Several students from Bengal pursuing Ukrainian medical degrees, back home after fleeing the war-torn country, have started to receive offers to complete their education from universities in Hungary, Georgia, Poland, Armenia and Romania.
The pressure from institutes in Ukraine‘s neighbouring countries, made via agents and coordinators, has been so unrelenting that several Ukrainian universities in Denipre, Ternopil, Vinnytsia and Ivano-Frankivsk were forced to start online classes, even with teachers hiding in bunkers or refugee camps.
But, for most students, it’s not an easy choice. “We are being bombarded with calls, texts and emails from agents and coordinators of multiple universities in other nations, which are offering us a chance to complete the remainder of the course,” said Swagata Sadhukhan, a student of Kyiv Medical University. “But we don’t know what the quality of education would be over there. We are in two minds whether to take up the offers right away and are, thus, opting to wait for a few more days,” she added.
Anubhav Chandel, a student at Vinnytsia Pirogov National Medical University, said he had also received offers from multiple agents but was wary of making a move right now. “I believe it is best to wait for instructions from the National Medical Council. The problem in those universities is that the courses will be conducted in the native language and not English,” he said.
A deterrent for most students would be the additional expenses. “Most of us have already paid for the entire third year’s fees. In Ukraine, we had to spend around Rs 4 lakh per year, but in other countries, say Poland, the cost of education would be more, as their currency is over eight times stronger than Ukraine’s,” said Chandel.
