NEW DELHI: Ukraine as well as Russia were among the top destinations for Indian students heading abroad in the pursuit of higher education even as the United States of America and Canada attracted the maximum number, government data for the year 2021 has shown.
Interestingly, not just Ukraine, thousands of Indian students also flock to countries like Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan .
The data was shared in the Lok Sabha by Union minister of state for education Subhas Sarkar in response to a question by BJP‘s Harish Dwivedi.
According to the figures shared by the minister, 4, 45, 498 Indian students took admission in educational institutes based in foreign countries in the year 2021. The figure is an increase in number compared to 2020 but still less than 2019 when Covid fears were yet to bring the numbers down.
The data showed that of the students who went abroad in 2021, 18, 596 had gone to Ukraine, a country that presently is devastated bacause of an ongoing conflict with Russia.
The Indian government had launched a massive rescue effort named Operation Ganga to bring back these students many of who went to become doctors.
However, Russia, the country with which Ukraine is locked in conflict, too attracts Indian students in thousands. A total of 15, 814 Indian students had taken admission in Russian colleges and universities for their education in the year 2021 alone.
Other countries in the region also attract a lot of students. Kyrgyzstan also received 15,162 students in the same time. Kazakhstan, meanwhile, had 5,625 Indian students in 2021.
Overall, the United States of America and Canada were the countries that received the maximum number of students.
In the year, 2021, USA and Canada attracted the highest number of Indian students. Both countries gave admissions to over a lakh Indian students in 2021.
